Sustainability project 5c
Throughout the month of April, we, the class 5c, worked on the topic of sustainability.
Nowadays, we need to change our attitude towards current issues such as global warming and other crises more drastically than ever. In order to achieve truly significant change, we would have to accept some alterations to our lifestyle.
Partly individually and partly in pairs, we designed our own puzzle pieces, which were then put together to create an overview of possible ways of using our natural resources more efficiently, and especially how we could guarantee food security for future generations in spite of the world’s growing world population, increasing desertification, and related problems.
With the videoclip we recorded in class we would like to give an insight into the topics we researched and discussed, like the resource-efficient method of aquaponics, the benefits of eating insects, the idea and principles behind underwater farms like Nemo’s Garden, the concept of vertical farming or even the ambitious aim of growing food in space. Many of these ideas sound highly futuristic but are in fact feasible and could prove to be intelligent solutions.
Eating insects, for example, would be a big step into the right direction because it could easily replace meat consumption and the environmentally damaging, resource-intensive farming that comes with large-scale meat production. Aquaponics, on the other hand, is a water-saving solution - a closed-loop system where water flows from a fish tank to a plant bed where it is purified while nourishing and watering the plants before being returned to the fish tank. If applied in a vertical farming context, the benefits double.
Our class was amazed by the variety of ideas and concepts which could help us keep our world clean - and satiated - in the future. We hope you will enjoy our poster, which is currently (May/June 2021) on display in the foyer.
